Audience Effects Theory

1) Write a definition of a passive audience: an audience which accepts everything presented to the.

2) Write a definition of an active audience: an audience that choose and interact with the media they consume.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory: audiences are always passive and take in everything they consume.

4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: the sun newspaper

 > Why: it tell audiences information about things going on in the world.

PERSONAL IDENTITY: movies set in places you've been to.

 > Why:  they related to something personally

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Tiktok

 > Why: it gives you infinite videos to watch so you can divert you attention onto them.

RELATIONSHIPS: Most social medias where you can dm

 > Why: they make you closer to celebrities

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

Elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications by creating a diversion as the multiple underwater clips seem relaxing in some way. The repeated view of animals interests some people which represent their personal identity. The audience would also be interested if they have a job related to nature and / preserving it. This documentary creates a relationship with David Attenborough but also teaches you about wildlife.
