Coursework: Summer Project 2025
1) Research: Music videos
a) Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:
Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied
How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?
Its a story about escaping a strict, controlling world to keep the audience interested. It shows themes like fighting for freedom and standing up for yourself, which match the song’s message. The clear storyline and powerful images make it more emotional and exciting to watch.
b) Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew
How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.
Its used to show emotion and create a dreamlike feel. The video uses close-ups to show the main character’s feelings and wide shots to make him seem alone. Bright, colourful lighting and bold costumes add to the fantasy style.
c) Music video 3: Foals - Hummer
How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?
Fast editing is used to match the wild energy of the music. Quick cuts, jump cuts, and flashing visuals keep the audience engaged and create a chaotic, surreal feel.
d) Music video 4: Kendrick Lamar – HUMBLE.
Camerawork is used to grab the audience’s attention. Powerful shots, like Kendrick framed in the Last Supper scene, make the video stand out. Low-angle shots make him look strong, while unusual effects like fisheye lenses and quick zooms keep the visuals bold and memorable.

3) Statement of Intent
For my media project, I'm making a two-minute video of Kendrick Lamar's song "i" (until 1:56). Because it is for a campaign for young adults to show how doing one small thing can help your community, I want it to be positive and show that small things and positive thoughts can help make an impact.
The song is about loving yourself, staying strong, and dealing with struggles. I’m matching the lyrics to my shots. The line “I done been through a whole lot” will be shown with a wide shot of Greenwich Hill during the day, showing the character looking around. “In front of a dirty double-mirror they found me” will be a close-up at Greenwich Hill, showing reflection and thought. The "I love myself" will be the lyric on top of Tower Bridge, Southbank, and Canary Wharf locations, where the character will walk around confidently.
Other lyrics like “Everybody lookin’ at you crazy” and “Lift up your head and keep moving” will be shot in tubes and tube stations, making it feel relatable to commuting around London making it feel real, showing the character overcoming struggles in life. The video ends with a Greenwich Hill sunset silhouette for “One day at a time, sun gonna shine,” giving a hopeful and positive finish.
The mood of the video will be positive but in an urban style with close-ups, wide shots, and slow motion to keep the viewer interested throughout. The colours will be bright when things feel positive and softer when it’s reflective. I want it to feel relatable to the viewers so they can see themselves in it so it naturally makes them inspired to do small positive things in their community therefore linking it to the brief
